Knitting Clock

Once in awhile you see something that makes you go "Oh that is so COOL!" and Elise Wihelmsen's knitting clock did just that! It knits one scarf a year, and keeps time by stitches.

Check it out here.

This is...

200

This is my 200th post! Amazing how time flies, isn't it?

When I started this blog in 2006 I had no idea that I would have kept it up this long. It chronicles so many things and every so often I like to look back and do a retrospective.

2006:

2007:
- I am read a lot, including my love affair with Grace Livingston Hill and Victor Hugo
- I started dating my husband, we had some great adventures.

2008:
- My sister moves to Senegal, where she learns many important things
- I race collegiate cycling for UW-Milwaukee, and won a bike race
- I graduate from undergrad!
- I lost a beautiful friend

2009:
- We moved to South Lyon, which was my 24th move. It was the most lovely cabin!
- We got our first Cat, Marley, which was my first adult pet
- Jon did the last of his bicycle races before completely quitting.
- In the last month of the year we spent a month Backpacking South East Asia.

I'm excited to see how 2010 brings itself to a close. Thank you for being my faithful readers for so many years, and welcome to the new ones who have just recently found it!

The heavens above us opened up...

Friends of ours are avid climbers and took us to Jurassic Park near Estes, Co to climb.

Jurrasic Park Climbing

I loved climbing around the rocks on the ground...

Jurrasic Park Climbing

But the real treat was feeling like you were on the roof of Colorado once you got to the top of a climb.

Jurrasic Park Climbing

I can't get over what a beautiful place we live. We are so blessed to have both an amazing state to call home and wonderful friends to adventure with!

Also, congrats to my brave JR for conquering his first lead!

The sky was so clear that it didn't look right...

De-cluttering is a major thing in our house right now. I tackled all the rooms in the house, culling as much as I could stomach to get rid of. I culled scraggly throw pillows, vases I haven't used in years, vintage hats I wanted to upcycle but knew I wouldn't and so much more.

Comet Cleaner

Also, I finished up projects that had been sitting around for ages, like the window I was painting on. It's now happily sitting on my wall in my living room.

There was just one more room in our house that needed some TLC - the Dreaded stuff room. I have come to terms that this is our "garage."

Gravity Kayak Rack

When you have as many time consuming/stuff acquiring hobbies as we do you need a place to put all six bikes, two kayaks, climbing equipment, tools, clothes, tents, and so on. It's nearly impossible to organize this stuff beautifully in a space that small, so we are striving for functionality. It would be nice to not have to wade through a swamp of panniers, broken bike parts, climbing gear, and suitcases!

Most of the stuff belongs to my husband, so when he came home from California this weekend he got to work tossing the things he felt he didn't need any more. Out went old maps, a wheel, a bike frame he'll never ride again, a army surplus backpack that weighed a ton, and much, much more. We essentially were able to clear out an entire carload of stuff! The house feels lighter already! My husband casually hinted that the trick is to not replace the stuff. I may have to extend my moratorium on buying pyrex to the rest of the house for awhile!

Here are some resources to help you out with your de-cluttering:

-Call me a nerd, but I've used flylady in some capacity since I was in high school.

-I am in love with many, many houses on apartment therapy. When I see the tidy (albeit staged) homes, I am inspired to clean up and toss out. Two of my recent favorites are Shauntelle & Dave and Katherine & Jem.

-Small Notebook is another great place to find de-cluttering hints and tips. I love her attitude towards organization and this is a great place to start.

Through the blackened air and all

Will I meet you this early way?

I'm in complete love with Nina Nastasia's Outlaster. Every album of hers just gets more and more perfect. How is it possible for someone to be so talented?

Homeward Bound

I'm sitting in the airport for my 9:00 AM flight that takes me home .

The Second San Fransisco Day

Goodbye California, Hello Colorado!

When I get home I'm going to:
- Play with my cats
- Declutter my house, put stuff on craigslist, or try to trade it
- Pack up all the things to ship for Etsy
- Unpack and do laundry
- Grocery shop
- Sleep
- Trail Run

What side of the bay?

I am currently residing in the messiest hotel room on this side of the bay.

The Second San Fransisco Day

There are clothes everywhere, the counter is littered with makeup and sunscreen.

The Second San Fransisco Day

We won't even let the maid in.

The Second San Fransisco Day

It's that bad.

PS: Go listen to S. Cary's "We All Grow" here. Preferably at night. Preferably in a quiet, trashed hotel room.

Reyes Point

Jon and I took a drive up to Reyes Point, which is a National Seashore.
Reyes Point

It was cold, foggy, but so beautiful!

Reyes Point

We don't live anywhere near the beach, so there was a lot of running around being excited by the ocean!

We also decided to use up the memory card on the Camera and the Phone to take video, so I shoved together some of the clips to make this video:

The music is Heidi Spencer - Texas in a Drawer. She's from my Native Milwaukee, but the song just seemed to work!

Running (wo)Man

This Saturday, two days after flying into Milwaukee, I got up early to run the Sprint for Spina Bifida.

IMG_1563

The race itself went quite well. I paced very fast for my first mile (7:00 flat!) and slowed down considerably for the last two, with a finish time of just under 26 minutes - enough to place me first in my age group, and give me a new 5K PR!

IMG_1572

I'm not sure how many people were in my category, or how many women there were overall, but I think I counted 9 or 10 that passed me - I have yet to see any official results online so I'm not sure yet.

Speaking of Favorite Dresses...

My friend Brigitte, who is an incredible artist, knows my camera better than I do and took these amazing photos of me, my mom, sister, and grandma at my brother's state-side wedding reception...

The No Reason Cake

My birthday was months ago, and I had a great cupcake tree with delicious gluten free cupcakes, but I've been looking at these beautiful cake toppers on etsy - I might have to make a cake for no reason at all!

Favorite Summer Dress...

I've been trending towards white this summer - my white vintage dresses are in heavy rotation, but I've also fallen in love with this wool (yes, wool!) dress.

IMG_0786

It's created with a wool ribbon that has been sewn together to make a pattern - the front and back are all one piece with just two side seams. It's incredibly detailed, ornate, and catches on everything.

Despite that, I love it! I wear a white slip and a petticoat under it and I'm good to go!
